7herbsThe book I am sharing with you Seven Herbs, Plants as Teachers written by Matthew Wood is unassuming at first glance but do not let the size fool you. His one hundred and twenty pages will take you into an elevated place of learning our connection with plants, their ability to remind our entire being of self-healing and impart stories of our past where plants and humans were woven together in lore, scripture and myth. His studies are notable and conveyed with a thoughtful mind as a student of life and healer.

The first guidepost on this journey and the one I will focus on is the Easter Lily. There are in fact two forms, the Madonna and the Easter both prepared and used for medicinal purposes in ancient times, but really not much is heard about this flower and its usefulness today. With Easter holiday arriving soon we will all see this striking white flower waiting to be brought into our homes the example of Christ and purity in nature. This is a good time to expand our knowledge of this flower even further.

Matthew Wood states the remedy of Easter Lily tincture will cleanse waste material from the organs which sustain the fetus. He explains that he has seen it remove cysts from breasts, ovaries, and uterus and you will find many examples of his administration of this tincture and the follow up of his patient’s conditions. Numerous times Easter Lily has also effected a corresponding change in attitude bringing about the ideal and reality in life, particularly in sexual matters. Beautifully he explains that just as it cleans the organs of physical generation; it cleans the corresponding organs of spiritual generation. It creates the space for the beginning of the spiritual journey.

This is where the book will summon you in and ask that you pay close attention to what you are reading. This is not simply a clinical look into what this plant can offer you. It asks you to understand the complexity of human nature and the subtle moments of mystery where plant and human converge. The author explains the integration of purity of spirit as well as the sexuality in females that can occur with this flower essence tincture. He points out its best use is on women who may be idealistic or undiscriminating in the application of their sexual energy. The author describes the embodiment of the Lily and what it represents back to Genesis and the story of Adam and Eve. That human nature is composed of contrary inclinations. We strive to do well, but our natures are open to temptations. “God sets up a situation whereby this truth about ourselves can be made to manifest.” In this passage, the author reminds us of who we are and that within healing is forgiveness and indeed creates space for the beginning of the spiritual journey.
