Choosing Change in Your Life

By Shelly Wilson

Spend a few moments in reflection. Be completely honest with yourself while you ponder the following questions:

Do you desire change in your life? Do you feel like you are simply existing? Are you living your life to the fullest degree possible? Are you ready to let go of the past, live in the present, and look to the future?  Are you ready to live an authentic life, be the best you can BE, and learn to LOVE yourself?

Speaking for myself, I can honestly say that I simply existed for many years. I would wake up in the morning, trudge through the day, go to work, take care of my family duties, go to sleep, and then would start over the next day with the same routine. My vitality for life was nonexistent.

I tended to put everyone else before me. I was literally that pot on the back burner of the stove. The pot you stir occasionally, but aren’t too worried about because you’ve kept the heat turned low. Well, sometimes we altogether forget about that pot, and its contents become scorched. I quickly realized that all the pots on the stove are equally important and should be stirred. I took time to assess what I chose to change in my life; then went about creating this change. I quickly realized the importance of taking care of ME and the impact that this has on my well-being.

As you begin, I invite you to acknowledge those areas of your life that are fulfilling as well as those areas that are less than fulfilling. In order to choose change, it is imperative that you now acknowledge, recognize, and identify exactly what aspects of your life that you desire to change. Be honest with yourself. Do not allow another individual to influence what you choose to change. This is your life that you are living!

Do a mini mental life review at this moment and assess how you feel as the thoughts come into your awareness. I recommend that you spend some additional time reflecting on the changes that you wish to make as well as what you desire to achieve and manifest. Take time to write these thoughts on paper. A thought becomes tangible once it is written on paper. It takes form. You can see the words and touch the paper. Read through what you have written. Read it again aloud and really listen to what you are saying.

Review and assess how you feel when reading the words you have written on the paper.

How does your body react? What is your body telling you? Do you become emotional as you read what you have written?

Your physical, mental, and emotional responses to these questions are a good indicator of the change you desire. Allow yourself to be present and process what you are feeling. Recognize the impact these words have on your be-ing. Breathe in deeply and exhale as you begin to move forward. Recognize that change takes time and that it is important to honor yourself and what you are feeling at all times. In addition, change doesn’t happen overnight. Envision yourself as a continual work-in-process – ever evolving and always learning and growing.
