What Remains When You’re Gone?

What Remains When You’re Gone?

By Veronica Honstein

Sometimes I like to sit and think about my life. What will it be like five or ten years from now? Will I have realized my dreams from today? What kind of new dreams will I have? I remember being in high school and thinking being 21 was so old. After 21 came and went, I realized how age and the concept of “old” is really just relative to who you are at the moment and what your beliefs are, and I stopped believing in the word “old.” I stopped seeing people as numbers and started seeing them as people. I focused more on how they treated me and others and I stopped imposing on myself certain beliefs such as: I can’t do that because I am____years old, If I wanted to do something I would just do it.

Today, I look around at others and myself and I think: “Really? This is what being an adult is?” As a child I used to look up to adults thinking they were so smart and knowledgeable, thinking they had their lives together. Ha! If I had known then what I know now about adulthood and life and what it really means and how we still carry fears and insecurities, and that we most certainly do not have it all together (and that’s OK), I would have spent more time looking up to my little self and less time looking up to them.

My mind then keeps wondering about my life 30 years from today, when I am 64. What will my life look like then? What kind of lessons will life have taught me? I keep on going to my death. How old will I be when I die and what will I die of? Will I have had any regrets? What would my most cherished memories have been? What difference would I have made in the world, and what gifts and legacy would I have left it with? I keep on going after my death. My children will remember me, some of my grandchildren as well. What stories will they tell about me and how will they remember me? What about after my grandchildren? My great grandchildren will probably not know who I am…neither will their children…and just like that I am reduced to be but a collection of stories and memories that were it not for my children or grandchildren would fade away.

Our time here on earth is but an infinitesimally small fraction of less than a nanosecond if you were to compare it to eternity. We behave as if we are so important, but who will remember us 100 years from now? Not even our own family will. We become but a fading memory that once existed in physical form on planet earth. So is there anything that matters that we leave behind? There really is only one thing that matters and that remains here, and that is the energy of love. I’m not talking about romantic love, the kind of love Hollywood has made us think is the only one that matters or exists. I’m talking about the pure energy that makes you get up in the middle of the night to feed the baby when you haven’t gotten any sleep. The energy that makes you want to lend a helping hand when you know someone’s in trouble.  The kind of energy that pushes you to work an extra shift because you know your family needs the money. Love is the energy that brings us together.

The energy of love is the most powerful energy that exists on our planet. It propels us into action, and when we lack it, it can sink us into depression. It is healing, soothing, and supportive. It is said human beings have two basic needs, apart from the physical ones such as food and shelter, and that is to be loved and accepted. Few really understand the great power of the energy of love. Some might say, well, hate is just as powerful. Hate is powerful, but love will always be more powerful and will always cast out hate, because love is where we come from, the basis of who we are and what we are made of, it’s the only thing that’s real. Hate stems from fear, and fear is an illusion created by the ego, and therefore will never stand up to the great power of light and love and will eventually dissolve in its presence.

In the book, Power vs.Force, The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior by Dr. David Hawkins, Dr. Hawkins calibrated levels of human consciousness. These levels range from 20-1,000. With level 20 calibrating at the level of Shame and level 1,000 calibrating at the level of Enlightenment. He said that today, 85% of the human race calibrates below the critical level of 200 which are the levels of shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger, and pride, while the overall average level of human consciousness calibrates at 207, the level of Courage (pg. 95). How is it that if 85% of the human race calibrates at 175 or lower, human consciousness calibrates at the level of courage above 200? That is because “although only 15 percent of the world’s population is above the critical consciousness level of 200, the collective power of that 15 percent has the weight to counterbalance the negativity of the remaining 85 percent of the world’s people.

Because the scale of power advances logarithmically, a single avatar at a consciousness level of 1,000 [such as Jesus or Buddha] can, in fact, totally counterbalance the collective negativity of all mankind. (pg. 282) In fact, one individual at level 500, the level of Love, counterbalances 750,000 individuals below level 200. “Were it not for these counterbalances, mankind would self-destruct out of the sheer mass of its unopposed negativity, We can see from this analysis that even a few loving thoughts during the course of the day more than counterbalances all of our negative thoughts (pg. 283).

This also lets us see how one person really does make a difference in the world, even if they’re not doing anything but loving others. There is tremendous power in love, but don’t think being loving means being passive. If someone insults you, stand up for yourself, but there is a difference in how you choose to deal with certain situations, and the more you start revolving around the energy of love in all forms, the less you will attract these situations to you.

It is my wish and intention to leave this world with a legacy of love and compassion that long after I leave this planet, and long after my family forgets who I am, the energy of love I left here will still be floating around touching everyone and everything. I have always remembered and loved the end of the movie Ghost, where Sam finally appears to Molly and says to her as he is leaving: “It’s amazing Molly, the love inside, you take it with you.” Love is really all there is, and yes, what the world needs now is love sweet love.
