One Suburban Mom’s Journey Through The Secret

Consciously Creating Through the Law of Attraction

By Dawn Allcot

I’ve been up. I’ve been down. On this roller coaster ride of finances and emotions over the past 6 years, I’ve discovered and re-discovered some important truths. The Law of Attraction truly IS a law. It works whether you want it to or not. We create everything in our lives, good and bad. This may sound harsh, especially to those who are poor, sick, dying, depressed or feel they were dealt “a bad lot” in life. But it’s true.

On some level I always knew this. My parents imparted in me the philosophy: “Take responsibility for your own actions.”

My biggest pet peeve is people who fail to do that… and then expect others to pick up the slack. The Law of Attraction is taking responsibility to the extreme, the logical conclusion. It leaves nothing to fate or chance. A few weeks ago, though, I had a crisis of faith and thought it was the ultimate hubris to feel that way. You see… I had manifested everything I wanted in life… and then came very close to losing some of it. I thought my arrogance, my recognition that others can, and should, take responsibility for their own lives, brought about my downfall. But now I know that’s not true. It was my own doubt that brought my downfall. Those buried feelings that I don’t deserve it any more than those other people, who are suffering, do. Even as I condemned them for negative thoughts that created negative circumstances I felt, on some level, it should be me. And so it was.

Having taken this journey through the world of the Secret, there and back, I want to offer my words of advice. I’m still not near the top of where I expect to be (I’d be lying if I said I was) but I can see it this time. I just need to banish the doubt, greet every manifestation with gratitude, and remember that I can feel empathy for others without getting sucked into their vortex of negative or overtly blaming them for their circumstances. Because that’s not very empathetic, is it? So where can things go wrong on this journey to creating everything you deserve in life? Here’s my take on it: When we fail to consciously choose or thoughts and feelings, when we have not developed the habits that let love and light shine through, we attract things we may not necessarily want. Yet when we take the time to consciously create our days, we can manifest anything – anything at all in the Universe and those things that have not yet been discovered, too.
Right now, I am sitting here broke because of poor choices I made. I chose to blame others. I focused on what I didn’t have rather than the blessings all around me.

But, because of the mentors I have attracted into my life in the past, I am better equipped than some to recognize where I went wrong and turn it around.

But it takes practice. It does not always come easily or naturally to everyone, to consciously move toward pleasure, choose the thoughts that make us feel good, and attract abundance in every area of our lives. But it’s possible.

I’m convinced that, for some people, harnessing the law of attraction to their benefit, every time, is easy. It comes naturally. These are the people we see on television, on the lecture circuit, at the top of their fields. They are the people with natural charisma, who know that “a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.” We are drawn to them. We wish to be like them, to BE them. But we shouldn’t.

We can only be ourselves, using the Law of Attraction to help ourselves and everyone around us to be happier, healthier and more abundant. With this revelation, I am being given a second chance to put into action the truths I know about The Secret (to life, the universe and everything, if you will).

This time, on my journey to the top, I will remember. I can do anything, and I can lift up others to do anything, too. Not through harsh judgment, but through kindness and understanding.

“When we know better, we do better,” a very wise woman once told me. I know better. Now it’s my turn to do better.

  • Great article, Dawn! Many of the thoughts you shared are exactly what I’ve been thinking and reflecting on recently – you helped me get past the little doubt party I was having. You are very brave to bare your sole, and I commend you. That, in itself, shows your remarkable growth. Your willingness to let others see that everything is not perfect in the world of manifesting because we as human beings are not perfect. We allow self-doubt to destroy what we had worked so hard to achieve. It seems to take forever to “get there,” but crashes down so quickly. At the same time, you shared the exhilaration of knowing we can all get back up, jump on that horse, and RIDE!

  • Cindy,
Thanks so much for your response AND the kind words. Once I opened my mind to receiving good — for the first time about six years ago — I started attracting *wonderful* people… I am glad we are able to be traveling companions on this lifelong LOA ride! Even if we go without talking for a while, know that I am thinking of you. 😀
