Being Our Best

by Janice Chrysler

When my kids were going to school, taking part on a team, competing in anything, learning to play the piano or attempting to earn a scout or brownie badge I always told them to give it their all and that was all that mattered. I wanted my children to discover the best in themselves, to not do things in a half hearted manner but to really do their best. Did they? Well, that remains open for discussion but looking back I do believe they did what they considered to be their best at that moment in time.

Over the years I have come to realize that we are not meant to fit into the same molds or dance to the same drum but each of us has our own unique way of discovering life and forging our path; too bad as a parent I didn’t think of things quite that way! I am sure I would have saved everyone a lot of grief!

But does being the best we can be begin and end with school? When do we really grow up? How do we know when we get there? If we continue to look at life through the eyes of a child, innocent and with the hope of learning and discovery, we will find there is always something new to try, to uncover and experience. Some things will be wonderful and worth holding on to and others will be a lesson and our test at learning to let go and release. The important thing to remember is we do have a choice in what goes on in our life. ..how it affects us. It may not be easy but it is worth the effort.

How do we know when we are doing our best? Perhaps when we realize we are living the present moment and allowing love to guide us. When we no longer let the past and its negativity rule our thoughts and decisions today or maybe it is when we feel the future is something to look forward to and embrace for we recognize it as a new beginning. When we no longer “settle” but rather look for ways to expand our knowledge, ways to spread love and become love. Just maybe it is in those moments of reflection that we find the mirror of our soul and go deep within our own being and uncover who we really are and in doing so realize we have so much more to give and become.

Being our best perhaps is found in those times of contentment when we accept things we previously could not. It is during the moment when we truly believe we are children of God and deserving of joy and happiness, even in our darkest times when the light can feel so far away. Our best can be felt in times of mediation when our Higher Self connects to true love and we allow ourselves forgiveness and acceptance that we too are here for a reason. Our best is when no one else sees, hears or feels what we do but we know we are experiencing something grand, something wonderful and it is unique to us. It can be a realization of our purpose, a feeling of release of emotional pain, a knowing that Spirit lives within and around us, or it can be as simple as freely without much thought, finding ourselves giving thanks to all of creation and our part in it.

Accepting we are doing our best does not mean we stop learning or setting goals for ourselves. Without a dream to live, a wish to fulfil or a mission to complete what would be the sense in being our best? The most satisfying sense of achievement will come from an inner feeling of knowing we have done something for us, for our own awareness and betterment. In doing so, we will increase our desire and ability to serve others in a way that will make their lives more meaningful and ours more fulfilling. This often comes in the simplest of ways. An act of random kindness can mean more to someone than you will ever know. Our example can be the light someone is looking for to brighten their corner of the world if only for a moment.

Being our best is a way of being. It is done without effort, without contemplation and always without judgment of ourselves and others. We don’t want the bar of our best to be set so low we are never challenged nor so high we can never achieve it but rather allowing our heart to guide us, our intuition to give us wisdom and our Higher Self to prompt use we are driven to be continuously learning, evolving and growing. Our best is always changing and in our expansion of mind, body and spirit we are willing to push ourselves to be all we can be and open to all possibilities.

Never allow our age, our resources or what we feel are our present abilities to prevent us from reaching and surpassing our goals. Above all, never allow judgment of ourselves and of others to stop us from living life to the fullest. By putting aside the comparison game we can then focus on our best and see ourselves in a whole new light.
