The Universal Law of Cause and Effect

By Rev. Marcy Ellen

One of the most valuable teaching instruments aiding in the evolution of human consciousness is the all-pervading universal Law of Cause and Effect. It is simple yet so profound. It teaches us by simply returning equal and opposite reactions to our own personal actions. In this way the traits of the ego, which we are unable to see, get revealed to us for the purpose of deeper introspection. The ego is blind to its own faults but is an expert at pointing out the flaws of others. So one of the ways that we restore our vision is by literally having our faults returned to us over and over again until we make the connection between the cause and the effect.

If one person physically strikes another person chances are they will get struck back or they will have some kind of negative consequence that corresponds to that negative action. If the person were to continue with the same action then they would also continue receiving the negative consequence associated with that action, inevitably resulting in a pattern. At some point the conscious mind will make the connection between the action and the reaction or the cause and the effect. If they decide that they want to break the pattern then they can stop the effect by putting a stop to the cause.

Whenever we put a negative cause out into the universe it’s like throwing a boomerang. It may or may not hit someone else but it will always come back around to hit us. The more awake and conscious we are the more aware we will become of these boomerangs that are coming back around for us. In fact this is one of the reasons why we have so much fear and anxiety when we are in conflict with others. We can sense, especially if we initiated a conflict or threw the first boomerang, when something negative is heading back in our direction. We may not realize it consciously but subconsciously we know that every cause is followed by an effect.

The only way to eliminate or at least decrease the amount of these boomerangs that come back to us is to stop throwing them in the first place. Often times we launch one at someone because they launched one at us. We behave defensively because we don’t understand that there is already a built in defense mechanism that never fails. If someone throws a boomerang at us we don’t have to throw one back because the one that they threw will automatically come back to them. The only thing that we need to do is duck or get out of the line of fire. The boomerangs we can’t avoid getting hit by are the ones that we throw ourselves.

Nobody else is responsible for the effects that we create in our lives. The Law of Cause and Effect is a brilliant teacher and it is meant to help each and every one of us receive fairness throughout our life lessons. However we can only learn our lessons when we become aware that it is us who cause the effects. Until then the ego continues to point fingers at the external world. As long as we blame others for our own experiences we will never have the power to alter them.

When we become aware of the causes or boomerangs that we throw out into the universe astounding things begin to happen. We begin to have realizations about why we are having the experiences we are having and we begin to connect the dots between the causes and the effects. Then through our innate desire to reduce conflict and stress we begin to take action to reduce or eliminate these boomerangs altogether. The less negative causes we put forth the less anxiety we experience and the more harmonious our lives become. It is entirely up to us how we want to live. We can live a defensive life in the line of fire running from our own boomerangs or we can live an offensive life by putting into play only those causes that will bring us positive effects such as joy and peace.
