Shift Your Perspective: On Spirituality

Perspective is reality, and what you believe drives your behavior and the way you feel about life. This includes spiritual practice. If you’ve been feeling scattered, jumping from one modality to the next, one guru to the next, it’s time to sit down and get to the heart of what you believe in order to define spirituality for yourself.

Each person has a unique view and way of responding to spiritual beliefs and practices. Even when groups form based on a primary belief system, such as with Christianity, Paganism, New Age, or Buddhism, there are many variations on these systems and the way they approach life and spiritual practice.

Some take a more eclectic approach, combining the aspects of each system they feel rings true. Consider the goals you are trying to achieve through your chosen practice and beliefs. Are you focused on methods to connect to Spirit in a more consistent and meaningful way? If so, how do you define the idea of Spirit? This definition will determine if your current approach is the most effective way of interacting with Spirit.

Is your approach monotheistic (one God or overarching energy) or polytheistic (many gods)? Do you prefer a strict, organized approach, or a more free-flowing one? Do you enjoy participating in spiritual practice with groups, as an individual, or a combination of both?

Journal about your experiences. Have you been performing certain spiritual practices out of habit? Do they still serve you given your current level of understanding? Is your spirituality inherited, that is, adopted from family traditions? If so, what does it mean for you?

After defining Spirit and spiritual beliefs for yourself, ask: How does your definition of spirituality change your perception of the world and how you choose to behave? Are you embodying your beliefs and the nature of Spirit as you’ve defined it? What needs to change in order to be aligned with this mindset and belief system?
