A Master Who Defies Worship…

Mirra Alfassa, the famous master known also under the name, ‘The Mother’, said in 1956 to her most prominent disciple, Satprem, “No, no one wanted to become. To worship was so much easier.” People were smiling and didn’t understand the importance of this warning. The Mother’s Agenda, a comprehensive work that encloses more than 6,000 pages in 13 volumes, is a must-read series for any spiritual seeker.

When Gurdjieff, the most known western mystic of the last century, pushed away his main student, P.D. Ouspensky, people literally thought that the master lost his mind. Ouspensky was also puzzled and confused about this unusual decision was taken by Gurdjieff. But Gurdjieff saw that Ouspensky was on the wrong path; instead, to transform himself and practice what he was teaching, Ouspensky started to worship and venerate Gurdjieff.

Jesus, himself, asked the Apostles not to worship him but to understand and practice what he was teaching. Of course, nobody was listening to him; worshiping was much easier.

Why do we continuously go into the trap of glorifying people who are able to achieve God’s realization? Why do we continuously deny our own possibility to be like them? What is keeping us in this spiritual lethargy, in this slowness and inactivity?

Well, obviously, it is much easier to ask somebody else to do our job. It is much easier to think that a master will do it for us. But it does not work this way. First and foremost, there are no shortcuts in any spiritual realization. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, or how many workshops you are going to do, or how many technological advanced tools you are going to use. You still must follow your own growth and sweat on that road until you find who you really are and why you are here.

Secondly, no master is going to do your work here in the third dimension. Remember that Ananda had forty years with Buddha and nothing happened to him. Ananda was so puzzled when Buddha just touched the head of a new disciple, Mahakashyap, and Mahakashyap started dancing filled with energy and bliss. Ananda, very upset, said that for more than forty years Buddha was touching his head and nothing happened to him. He could not comprehend how Mahakashyap became enlightened just with a touch of the Master.

What happened there, almost 600 years prior to Jesus coming here, was that Mahakashyap surrendered in the hands of Buddha. If you are able to completely abandon yourself in the hands of a master, then the master’s energy will flow into you. For us, it is hard to understand but a master is completely and entirely empty; a master is like a crystal clear lake that entirely reflects your ego, without bias. Do not expect to get the same answer to a question as someone else. The answer reflects your state of consciousness, not his.

Osho used to say that if you ask a master an idiotic question, you are going to receive a similar answer. Of course, you will think that the master is silly, but his answer is just a reflection of your consciousness. The master is a sort of spiritual boomerang; anything you throw to him returns to you. He remains untouched and detached. Once we surrender in the hands of the master, our energy will join the ocean of emptiness where the master is living and we will become. The worship phase will come to an end.

The message now is that it is time for people to find the master within. The message is very profound. In a world where we completely lose our values and are surrounded by surrogates and fake self-called spiritual teachers, we need to reconnect with who we really are. Going into the heart is the key. We need to surrender the logic side and embrace the intuition. We need to let go of resentments and hatred and remember the golden rule: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

Then, we might be able to find the master. We might be able to find the master within us.
