What is Spiritual Maturity, and Do I Have It?

Whether we have been on the spiritual path for a very long time or are just now beginning, we may find ourselves asking: “What is the value in this? Is there value to these spiritual practices? Any truly significant value from integrating them into my life?”

The answer lies deep within each of us, and it’s different for every person. We are drawn to spiritual practices because, at some level, we know that it leads to the cultivation of our very own life mastery … spiritual maturity. Spiritual maturity ultimately results in a deep, inner sense of happiness and fulfillment. So, what, you may ask, is spiritual maturity, and how do I get there?

There are many aspects of spiritual maturity. One of the most important is to consciously allow our creative power. Whether it be God, our Higher Self, our Spirit, our Heart energy, or whatever we call it  –  to flow. We allow it to work through our lives so that happiness, fulfillment, and what makes us feel good to come from inside ourselves. We recognize that it’s an inside job.

Another aspect of spiritual maturity is non-attachment. We are no longer attached to the outcome of any situation. Being attached is when we set our feelings on a particular situation turning out a certain way. We have an attachment to a particular outcome. We hope our book becomes a New York Times Best Seller. We don’t want it to rain on our picnic. We want someone we like to notice us. We want our favorite sports team to win. We want a specific outcome, or we will be disappointed. We will not be happy unless this outcome happens. That is attachment. The practice of non-attachment requires that we consciously choose to let go of our attachment. We decide that we don’t mind what happens, that we will be happy no matter how it turns out. This really does take practice; we need to remind ourselves.

Spiritual maturity also includes compassion and tolerance. Both compassion and tolerance support our journey through life, particularly in how we interact with and relate to the rest of humanity. It helps to remember that everyone is on their own soul journey. Everyone is really driving their own bus through life. We only drive our own. Hence, compassion and tolerance allow us to bless them on their journey, love them, and understand they are here to make their own choices about everything.

Spiritual maturity also includes introspection. The process of introspection consists of the concepts of going within, tapping into our intuition, using our inherent Wisdom, learning about ourselves. In other words, allowing and understanding that introspection is more than just looking inside to see what is going on with us.  It will enable us to explore more of who we really are. The exploration, the expression, and Wisdom from that discovery are all part of what comes with introspection. When we quiet our minds, we find great opportunities to connect with the underlying stillness beneath everything. When we can touch that stillness, that space between thoughts and that space between words strengthen our inner senses and inner awareness. This helps us in the outer world as much as it does in exploring our inner world.

Spiritual maturity also includes authenticity. Being authentic is being real no matter our situation, no matter how we are dressed or where we are. It is about expressing who we are in full consciousness. Allowing ourselves the heart space to know that we are okay no matter who or what is happening to us.

Integrity is another attribute of spiritual maturity. It is about living our lives in congruence with our values, congruent in mind, body, and Spirit. It means we are living our truth. It means we are doing the work, the processing, and spiritual development, to bring our lives into a state of integrity. Integrity and authenticity go together. And remember, above all, it is an inside job!

Lastly, one of the most important aspects of spiritual maturity is the energetic feeling and gratitude. No matter where we are on our path or how much work we feel we have yet to do, one of the most supportive and expansive practices is feeling and expressing our gratitude for everything.  We get so busy in our lives with what’s happening next that we tend to allow only brief periods to experience that fundamental stillness that represents who we truly are.

As we emerge more and more as our true selves, we will find a place, an experience, to remind ourselves to feel grateful for the grace of all lives. We awake for the pleasure of love and life and wholeness and peacefulness. Becoming or allowing ourselves to be thankful for what is in our lives and the beauty that surrounds us at all times brings with it remarkable changes within our mind, our body, and our Spirit. It is a sensation that seems to clear the mind, bring us back to the present moment, and calm our hearts.

Spiritual maturity establishes a basis for us to learn more and more about ourselves as we move into the extended, expanded versions of who we really are. Are you on the path to spiritual maturity?
