But compassion must also be balanced by boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>You see, our compassion is like water in a well. Our supply of compassion must be replenished, or we drain the well, and have nothing left for anyone, including ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>We can easily empty the well by extending our compassion too much in the direction of one person or too many people in a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p>Compassion boundaries help us in many ways:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 They help us to recognize how much we can extend ourselves at any time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 They show us where we are getting hurt in extending compassion to others.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 They remind us to also have compassion for ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 And they let us know when we must stop and replenish ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Compassion boundaries are essential yet fluid. Sometimes we can stretch ourselves more than at other times.<\/p>\n<p>We must learn to discern what compassion boundaries are healthy for us and become protective of those boundaries.
