A Global Stage for a Global Business
The beauty of the film industry today is that it is more of a global business than ever before and that people from all over the world can actually enjoy the same film. The task facing the filmmaker nowadays has never been more difficult in that the principal challenge is to find a common denominator between different backgrounds and cultures.
The films’ topics should not necessary be world topics. They can also be local. In the last film we produced in Africa, PUNCTURED HOPE, we exposed a phenomenon of slavery that mostly happens in West Africa. In the film that we are producing this summer, THE PROJECT (working title) – part of which will be shot in North America and part in Europe -, we are exposing the sexual abuse of children in the United States and its consequences. The topics of both movies are “local”. However, the way they are addressed in the films should equally resonate with people in different parts of the world. The reaction will not necessarily be the same; of course, African people will be more directly involved when they watch PUNCTURED HOPE, than the Asian people. Our artistic goal will be reached, however, if – in dramatic terms – we succeed in communicating to the Asian people the phenomenon of the slavery in West Africa or to the European people the horror of child abuse in the United States.
The English language diffusion, the television and the internet have made the world smaller and smaller. Nowadays, working in media means working for a global audience if the work that one does is successful. There are no borders for ideas, images and feelings. The aspiration of the people of the world has never in history been as similar as it is today. People want to be informed, they want to live in peace, they want a good future for their children. Most of the information that people get today does no longer come from the printed paper of books and magazines, instead, it comes from the screen: cinema, TV and computer.
In particular, in the world of feature film production, today’s high cost to produce movies makes it a necessity that the end product is liked worldwide and appreciated by as large of an audience as possible.
