Money in the Bank!

Reflection: “Yesterday is a canceled check – tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have – so spend it wisely.” ~Kay Lyons

A special story from Scott Stratten*…

“Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day, every evening deletes what you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Use all of it, of course.

Each of us has such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. (Note: There are 86,400 seconds in a 24 hour period.) Every night it writes off as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you, each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the “tomorrow.” You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success. The clock is running. Make the most of today. Take responsibility for your own happiness now. Enjoy life!”

‘If I could save time in a bottle’… The words in bold just above are the opening lyrics of a beautiful song written by Jim Croce sometime in 1973.

The song was scribed for Jim’s son A.J. and expressed Jim’s deep love and desire to make life count for his little one.

Have you ever thought about time as a bank account or something you can store away? I loved the Scott Stratten yarn; it is simply written, short, sweet and provoking! My kind of story; one that results in questions!

Suppose questions were like a baby’s building blocks and could be organized form the bottom up by size. With that picture in mind, the big question of the day is, ‘What do you do with your time?’ Next would be, ‘Are you happy at the end of the day?’ With the third block one might ask, ‘Have you ever given this subject a moments thought?’ You can stack more questions later if need be!

Another way to look at the time conundrum is when you find yourself saying, ‘I don’t have enough time to get everything done’ or, ‘I need more hours added to each day!’ I say that far too often! I wonder if, in this case, I am trying to get too much bang for my buck. And, if I am, what is slipping by unnoticed in my busy-ness? Might I be frittering away my own ‘interest’ at the same time I am emptying my time/bank account? Does this sound like something you may be doing too?
