Special Brew for Cold and Flu
by Coralie Darsey-Malloy
This special brew is something David came up with and he always makes it for me whenever I have a cold or flu. The combination of ingredients helps to support the immune system and has a cleansing effect.
There are a lot of people with colds and flu symptoms and I wanted to share what works for us.
4 cups water 2 TBSP ginger, 1 clove of garlic 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 lemon quartered 2 TBSP honey, maple syrup or brown sugar Boil for 20 minutes. If the brew is too strong you can dilute it with water. I take it throughout the day until the symptoms start to subside.
Brewing a combination of sage and clove tea helps and steaming chamomile and sage in a pot, putting a towel over the head and face and inhaling the steamy combo can help clear nasal passages.
I also use frankincense, lavender and other essential oils. I also soak in Epsom salts. I hope that some of these natural remedies help.
Take care of yourselves cold and flu season is arriving in many parts of the world.

This is very close to an old rememdy that’s been handed down in my husband’s family for decades and is simply known as “The Elixir”. Ours is 2 liters (quarts) water, 2 lemons cut in quarters, 1 large onion cut into quarters, 6 cloves garlic, 1.5 cm (1/2 in) fresh ginger sliced thinly, and 5 ml (1 tsp) cayenne pepper. Bring to boil and let simmer for one hour. Allow to cool. Mash ingredients, if desired. Strain and bottle. Can be frozen. To mask taste, small amount of a honey or maple syrup can be added. Take 60 ml (2 oz) twice a day during cold and flu season to ward off illness. Take twice to three times that amount if ill.
