The Living Art of Compassion

The Living Art of Compassion

by Vima Lamura

When a woman became pregnant, the women of the family tuned in to the spirit of the expectant baby and created a special song for the child. The song was taught to the village. Throughout days to come, everyone sang the sacred song in a vibration of preparation, welcoming the baby into the world. This song was a signature for the baby so he/she would never forget who they were as spirit in the human experience. Upon the day of birth, the whole village gathered and sang the sacred spirit song celebrating the arrival of this precious being.

Throughout the child’s life, in every rite of passage, the song was song by the village. In growth and developmental stages, the song was sung. Any troubles and challenges of youth, the child would respectfully sit in the presence of the village as everyone sung the sacred song, reminding the youth of her/his spiritual birthright. If a crime was committed by the child/adult, no matter what the degree of transgression, the individual was placed at the feet of the elders as the song was sung activating a remembrance of innocence and true spiritual identity. There was no judgments, no punishment and no separation. While the embracing hearts of compassion sang forgiveness, every note sung bookmarked remembrance in a healing grace that balanced the ills of ignorance.

Times have changed, but love hasn’t. The ways of civil evolution has taken its hand in the scheme of things only to bring us back to our true collective and individual identity in spirit and love. Compassion is a pathway to Love. It carries no burden of judgments, guilt, suffering, righteousness or punishment, right or wrong, good or bad… any form of dualistic density that inhibits the flow of pure feeling from the heart of our connectedness. Compassion heals in the silent chamber that feels others in heartfelt remembrance of spirit. I fumble attempting words to touch the sanctity of compassion… ending this note, only to say, Compassion, a rose undefined, yet I sit in awe of your beauty as the winds of awakening gently washes my soul with your fragrance of love.
