A Story of Censored Hope
by deZengo
This Humanity Healing STREETteam roving reporter finally caught up with the individuals responsible for the Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project (BCABPP) and was so inspired by the story, I had to share it. As a breast cancer survivor myself, being invited to participate in this project is an honor and one that I believe in and support.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project: A Fine Art & Photography Essay of Actual Breast Cancer Survivors. The project aims to include women of all ages, backgrounds, sizes, and shapes as well as various stages of their journey be it pre, post or non-reconstructive. Each image is custom designed and tailored to the participating survivor. Their design symbolizes something important to them or their personality and relates to the larger story of a breast cancer survivor. Many of the images have layers of details and symbolism but you’ll have to buy the book (when it’s done) to get the most details, behind the scenes images and most importantly the survivor stories and bios.
Although the images are not sexual in nature and are self image positive for the survivors and hope for others, Facebook has actually been censoring and removing images from this project, while other photographs suggestive in nature and exploitative continue to circulate. When asked if this was a personal attack, team lead Michael D. Colanero explained that he believed other users continue to report them to Facebook as inappropriate. Facebook then has the option to evaluate and review the images and project to see if they agree and then respond accordingly. We do not agree with the censorship and would like to ask for your support and signatures.
All images in the series are available as fine art prints and framed pieces being sold at the Ft. Lauderdale Studio.
