Reflections of a Reiki Master

By Janice Chrysler

The smoke from my smudge pot circles the sacred space I have prepared and I can feel the energy of those who are to come, both the students of today and the spirits of yesterday who bring in the welcoming of ancient teachings.  Soon, very soon, I will share this with others then they too will carry it forward. Like a torchbearer in a great marathon, each of us passing along the Light to another.  When we gather, I know we will all share similar stories of how we prepared for this day, what we expected and what drew us together at this particular moment in our lives.

Even though I will demonstrate traditional techniques and teachings of Reiki, I will encourage those who come to use their intuition in their healing practice.  Meditation will be taught as well as I personally believe we need to connect mind, body and spirit to become all we are meant to be; balanced within and without and one with Spirit. If we are not centered, how can we expect the Universal Energy Life Force to flow freely through us? Many will be surprised how relaxing and effortless it is to meditate, as they will not have practiced this before. I know the energy will fill our sacred space and be felt by all. As we welcome in the energy force we will undoubtedly sense a tingling in and through our bodies filling the room with this great energy. In the past there have been times when the clocks in the room stopped, cd players refused to work and the temperature oh how it rose! It is hard to say what will happen today.  How each one experiences it will be unique to what they require at this particular moment in time.  Some will cry, releasing negative blocks and fears while others will feel an immense sense of peace but all will know they have ignited within themselves the healer.  I will remind them throughout the day that they are but the vessel for this wonderful energy and to never take credit for it but rather to show gratitude for being able to share it.  We are all healers just waiting to be brought to life!

Finally, the time will come for the attunement: that moment when I, the teacher, will pass the symbols and learning into each student. The igniting of the Reiki force has begun. Then in a non-traditional fashion I will bless each one. Perhaps, if I sense the time is right I will give those who come an oracle card reading as a gift from their angels and guides.  A connection will be felt between us as we breathe in the loving energy embracing us. Everyone will no doubt be eager to use this new practice on family, friends and of course themselves.

As I think of all these things that will no doubt come to pass at the Reiki workshop I also know I will need to share with them another important bit of wisdom – truly amazing things can be accomplished but not everyone will be healed.  It is not always about making someone feel physically better.  Being able to assist another in finding their sense of contentment and peace is vital in healing on all levels.

I learned this early on when a patient came to me for hypnotherapy and Reiki. I sensed during her sessions that she would not live very much longer.  Of course, I did not tell her this but encouraged her positive attitude in living her final days seeking inner contentment. Between sessions I would send her more light and love.  Her longing for a sense of peace came to the forefront as her physical health worsened.  Then one day as I spoke to her on the phone she confided in me that she had found that peace she was looking for and how wonderful it had made her feel.  Two weeks later she died without pain or regrets.  I gave thanks for being the vessel through which Spirit moved to help her heal her own soul and find that contentment which made her transition peaceful and calm.  Since then I have found myself in similar situations with family members who are preparing for their next journey.  Sending healing light and love is often all that they need and the best we can give.

So I will tell my students they need not feel they have failed if they don’t “heal” everyone.  We have all planned our life course, including when the time will be right to leave this earthly plane.  The greatest gift these students can give is to be another’s helper along the way and that just may include being the one to assist them make the final transition. Death is not the end but a gateway through which the spirit must pass in order to become a soul set free; a new beginning beyond our understanding.  It may not be easy to say goodbye but to assist another go through that doorway without fear by way of love and compassion will be the greatest gift you can give them.

Soon this day too will be over but for now I will make the herbal tea, light the candles and incense and put on some soothing music.  Making myself comfortable in my big comfy chair, I take a few moments of silent meditation. The knock on the door rouses me gently from my inner sanctuary announcing the arrival of the students.  And so the cycle begins once more with a new circle of light workers, ready to carry on the torch for future healers. Namaste.
