Dear Whitedove
My husband and I have argued over the last two Christmas’s about what to tell our five year old twin daughters about Santa Claus. It is unpleasant and I would like to have a resolution for when next Christmas rolls around. I want to let them keep believing but my husband feels like it’s a lie. Is there any way that we can be honest while still keeping Santa alive in their minds?
~Truth hurts in Tulsa
Dear Truth
First of all Saint Nicholas was a real person. He gave his entire fortune to the poor and needy and spent his life helping to feed and clothe the less fortunate. As we all know just because someone’s physical body dies, does not mean that they are gone forever. We often call upon the saints, angels and other masters from the heavens to help us. Well as a parent you can tell your children that Santa Claus is simply the “Spirit” of St. Nick that lives in many of us. St. Nick’s spirit helps create Christmas miracles, and generosity that gives children toys and gifts when least expected. When you see a man dressed up as Santa Claus in the mall, he is playing homage to the real St. Nick who is all around us during this season. This way you are not lying, but you are allowing your children to embrace the Santa Claus tradition in a healthy way.
Dear Whitedove,
I’m getting pretty disillusioned with my church and their archaic rules and hypercritical abuses. Why does God allow so many religions all claiming that their doctrine is the only way to Heaven? Wouldn’t you say there’s a better way?
~Churchgoer in NYC
Dear Churchgoer,
Interpretations of spiritual doctrines have been the cause of much war and bloodshed throughout the ages. Religion is a man made system of rules and regulations that has created segregation, prejudice and limitations. However Spirituality is growth. As we evolve and grow we can expand our beliefs. The basic truths and principals are found in the Universal Laws. They apply to everyone. If everyone would live their life ethically, by The Golden Rule (which is mentioned in many religious text) then the world would be a perfect place, the paradise as God originally created. Remember: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Dear Whitedove,
Is it more spiritually correct to be a vegetarian? If animals are God’s creatures also, I sometimes feel incredibly guilty eating meat. Should I?
~Animal Lover in Lodi
Dear Lover,
Being a vegetarian is simply a choice. I’m told by spirit that your body will tell you what is best for you. Eons ago the animal kingdom volunteered to give up their lives to give substance to humans. This is how humanity became carnivores. Then the Indigenous tribes gave thanks with gratitude and took the lives with great care and respect. Today there are many sources of protein other than animal. Our foods are unfortunately so processed that the vibration is extremely low so it’s best to bless everything that you consume. With that said, go organic whatever your choice may be, God honors your free will.
