Feng Shui Tips to Live Life to the Fullest
It’s Your Space: How Are You Using It?
by Ken Lauher
I’ve been talking a lot about spring lately, on my blog and within these pages. Although I personally make it a point to treasure and express gratitude for all four seasons, spring is my favorite. You plant seeds so you’re ready to harvest the fruits of your labor in the fall. That could mean literally planting seeds for fruits and vegetables from a garden, or introducing habits and rituals that will change your life if you give them a chance to sink in.
Spring is about renewal, recovery, and even re-decoration. So I’d like you to think about a few questions:
1. Are you instilling habits, this season that will lead to great rewards in the future?
2. Are you using your home or apartment in ways that support these habits and helps you live the life you truly desire?
Remember, Feng Shui is all about aligning your space to your goals, so that the energy around you supports those goals.
Change Your Space to Match Your Dreams
If you’re looking at a windfall from tax season or maybe some extra cash now that you’ve paid off your holiday bills, it could be a good time to invest in your home, making changes that you and your family can enjoy now and in the years to come. This doesn’t have to be the standard changes, either, like a new quilt for spring or maybe new window coverings. I want you to look at your space and think about whether it supports the life you want to live or if it’s time to shake things up in some new and exciting ways.
When people go on job interviews, I advise them to dress “up” for the job they want to have, whether that’s upper level management or even CEO. Likewise, design and configure your home or apartment for the life you want for yourself and your family. Who cares if it fits the “rules” or blueprint of what a modern home should look like? It’s your space… live in it.
Let’s look at a few common goals and ways you might make them a focus in your life by changing the layout of your home or apartment.
Putting the Focus on Health and Fitness
Workout equipment in regular living space tends to turn into a coat rack. Placing workout equipment in a master bedroom can lead to challenges with sleep and romance. So where do you put your home gym?
If you’ve relegated workout equipment to a dark, damp room in your home’s basement, or stuck it in the garage, the environment could make working out a challenge. Consider getting some full-spectrum light bulbs for your workout area, and decorating the space in light, bright colors to make it feel larger and more inspirational. If you enjoy working out in front of mirrors, hang a large one on the wall. (Make sure it’s all one piece and big enough to see your entire face and body when you work out.)
Focusing on Family and Fun
The trend today is to give children their own space to play, separate from a more formal living room where adults may gather for conversation. Putting the play room or, for older children, a media room/home theater in a high-traffic area will lead to an emphasis on family togetherness and fun. Plus, it’s easier to keep an eye on the kids if they’re on the main level of the home.
When you design a playroom, keep everything low to the floor so kids can reach toys (and to discourage climbing.) Decorate in bright primary colors for mental stimulation.
If you have an extra room in your house, either in the basement or a spare bedroom, get creative. Build jungle gym equipment over padded floors to give kids space to play on rainy days, or create a small children’s bowling alley in one half of the room (or a dedicated Nintendo Wii bowling lane!) What would make you say, “Wow,” if you were a child? How can you build that experience for your family?
Focus on Business
One of my clients had always dreamed of having a healing room for her physical therapy practice in her home. During her Feng Shui consultation, we created that space. Not only did her clients love it, but, she said, the biggest transformation was in her own mindset. With the right tools and space, she began considering herself a professional, and others saw the same thing. Today, there’s a waiting list for her services.
Whether your home business needs are simply a desk, a computer and WiFi or specialized tools of the trade, building a space (whether it’s a whole room or just a corner), where you feel comfortable and productive will put the focus on your business and help you increase your income. I share some additional ways to Feng Shui your home office for success here.
A Few More Feng Shui Tips to Build the Home of Your Dreams
Your front entry has a lot of power when it comes to the focus of your life. Be careful about putting anything in the foyer, or in the first room you can see from the entry, because it may quickly become an unhealthy focus of your life.
For instance, placing your home library in the first room when you walk into the house can lead to a home’s residents being studious and introverted, which may not be a positive change if taken to an extreme. If your dining room is the first room you see, this could place an unhealthy emphasis on food, leading to excessive weight gain.
The first room you see when you enter a home or apartment should make the residents, as well as visitors, feel welcome, relaxed and peaceful. But don’t be afraid to break some of the so-called “rules” of design to create that space and make it work for you.
