7 Signs You Need a Feng Shui Makeover
HELP! I think I need a Feng Shui Makeover!
By Ken Lauher
Do you need a Feng Shui Makeover? Have you been reading this column, or maybe picked up a few books, but you’re still not really sure if Feng Shui can help you, where you are right now? I’m here to help you answer that question.
The truth is, Feng Shui can help everyone. Wherever you are, no matter how successful you are or if every day feels like a struggle, a Feng Shui makeover to your home or apartment can bring your environment into better alignment with your goals.
But there are certain circumstances when people can particularly benefit from the insight Feng Shui offers. If you’re experiencing certain patterns in your life, and you don’t like where those patterns have taken you, it may be time to consider solutions with a Feng Shui makeover.
Here are 7 signs you may need a Feng Shui Makeover:
1. You are house or apartment hunting or are just considering a move.
It’s much easier, and often less expensive, to begin in a home or apartment with good Feng Shui than to try to “fix” the Feng Shui in a space after you’ve moved in. A Feng Shui consultant can help you find a home or apartment that’s already in alignment with your life goals, and has energy that fits your personal energy, so you’ll be supported by your surroundings from the start.
2. You’ve experienced a change in fortune after a move, or your new home or apartment just doesn’t “feel” right.
If a residence has less than optimal chi, or life energy, we sometimes don’t notice until it’s too late and we’ve already moved in. Maybe your marriage, which was previously strong, is suffering in your new home. Maybe you’ve experienced an inexplicable change in finances not related to added costs in your new home. Perhaps your health is even suffering. After eliminating such causes as mold in your new home or allergies in a new location, it may be time to turn to Feng Shui to see how you can attract more positive chi, opportunity, love and good health in to your new home.
3. When you’re re-purposing rooms or re-arranging the layout of your home or apartment.
Often, we make changes to our home or apartment that shifts the layout of important rooms, such as the master bedroom. These changes affect the flow of energy in the home and can affect the residents’ fortune.
I consulted for a woman who moved her home office from the second floor to the first floor of her suburban home to make more space for a new baby and the addition of a playroom on the main level. She experienced misfortune in her home-based business until she optimized her new home office using Feng Shui principles, placing her desk in the command position, adding a fountain to the wealth corner, and making sure the door opened a full 90 degrees. Her children are sleeping better upstairs, her marriage has improved since she moved the master bedroom out of the front half of the home, and her business is booming.
4. When you’re undergoing major home renovations.
If you’re putting an addition on your home, renovating your kitchen or bathroom, moving or removing walls or making other major structural or cosmetic changes to your home, you may want to consult with a Feng Shui practitioner before making changes that could adversely affect your fortune. Home renovations can be costly and inconvenient; you can use Feng Shui to ensure that you’ll benefit from the changes rather than experience misfortune as a result of making the wrong home improvement choices.
When I consulted with one client in a New York apartment, I was able to work with the architect and contractors to determine the best layout for a new kitchen. We prevented a costly error of placing the kitchen stove within view of the front door.
5. When the surroundings around your home have changed.
Sometimes, the changes to our environment are out of our control. For instance, a new building may go up across the street from your home or apartment. A roadway might be expanded. Buildings might be razed, or trees might be planted. A Feng Shui consultant can evaluate the situation and determine whether the changes will work in your favor or not, encouraging the flow of positive chi in to your home or creating negative chi in your neighborhood.
There are several Feng Shui practices that can help deflect negative chi when it comes from outside sources. I talk about some of these Feng Shui Solutions on my blog.
6. When you experience sudden, negative changes in your fortune
We can create our own good fortune by having the knowledge and energy to spot opportunities that come our way and then taking advantage of those opportunities. But sometimes, we find ourselves making choices that don’t help us achieve the desired outcome, time and time again. Or sometimes we have trouble spotting opportunities; it feels as if they just aren’t out there for us, while other people get all the “good breaks.”
We create our reality based on our perspectives; is a specific obstacle “bad” or is it a learning opportunity and a challenge to be overcome? If you have been hit by a string of these “learning opportunities” in a row, you can use Feng Shui to improve your fortune and break this pattern of hard times. It’s especially important to consider Feng Shui as a solution if things have been going well and, then, on all of a sudden, you experience a change in fortune.
Hidden problems in your home, such as negative chi in the home’s central palace (the health center), “poison arrows” pointing at your home or apartment from other buildings, or a front entrance that isn’t welcoming, create a sense of discomfort that can, eventually, increase to critical mass and cause what seems like sudden bad luck. But it’s never too late to change your fortune with Feng Shui. A Feng Shui consultant helps you spot these hidden areas that seem to be sapping your energy, health and fortune.
7. When you feel as if you’ve had bad fortune and struggles all your life and aren’t sure where to turn.
On the other hand, some people may feel as if their whole life has been a struggle to get ahead, no matter where they are living. In this case, the patterns of their lives may contribute to negative Feng Shui in their surroundings.
A Feng Shui consultant can pinpoint the patterns that are leading to misfortune, ill health or even bad luck in romance, and can help you use Feng Shui to bring your environment into alignment with your goals. The right “change agent” can even help you pinpoint your goals if you aren’t sure what you want out of life. It’s difficult to spot the patterns in your life without outside assistance. Even if you’ve read many Feng Shui books, you may not feel as if you’ve gotten to the heart of the matter.

If you’re experiencing any one of these seven circumstances in your life, it may be time for a Feng Shui makeover to determine what improvements you can make to your residence and your life.
