Children’s Bedding: Fun for You and Them

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives. ~Albert Einstein

Love surges from the heart of a child when he sees a bedroom decorated with him or her in mind. If you’ve ever seen the TV show Extreme Makeover, you’ll know what I mean. The child feels loved because he and the things he loved were considered and deemed “good.” He feels good vicariously through this consideration. Children’s bedding is a big part of that feeling. Brand new sheets are such a pleasure to slip into.

When you furnish your child’s bedroom, it’s easy to customize it to fit your son or daughter’s preferences of style, color, room arrangement, etc. Once you’ve got the wall painted with his favorite color, and the furniture in place, it’s time to work on his bed covers.

There is a large assortment of coverings available today, both in local stores and on the internet – especially on the internet.  The search terms “children’s sheets” alone netted 36,000,000 hits! Before you begin any purchases, consider having at least two sets for the warmer and the winter months.

Let your child assist in the process unless what you’re doing is a surprise and you know for sure what will please him or her.  In the options available are sheets, blankets, spreads, quilts and comforters.

A quilt is generally made from two sheets of fabric (it might simply be two sheets) with a layer of batting in between. This covering can be very popular with children because they are warm enough without other coverings and the bed is easily made up the next morning. If you use a top sheet, a blanket and a spread, it’s a lot more for the child to learn to handle.

In Europe, a duvet is used frequently, and it’s much like a quilt, except the inside is not batting; it is filled with down and had a removable duvet cover that can be laundered. They might be a great choice for the colder months, where a light-weight chenille bed spread or quilt would work better for summer.

You’ll want to consider which fabric will work best for you.  Cotton is easily machine washed; other fabrics might require dry cleaning.

And then you can look at the style of children’s bedding.  Bed and Bath specialty stores provide a wide array of colors and styles, and they frequently have available patterns that children are drawn to – recent movie characters, dinosaurs, hearts or stars – so that your child can have sweet dreams, comfortable in the knowledge that he is love, considered, and lucky to have the bedroom of his or her dreams.

I think it’s wise to involve your child in the decision-making process, and if you’ve decided to make her a quilt, for example, she can see how the whole thing works and might be able to do some of the yard-tied quilting, for example. Imagine this: a child who actually wants to go to bed at night!
