Is Using Psychic “Tools” Taboo?

By Shay Parker

As the founder of Best American Psychics, I am often asked the question about whether psychics who use “tools” such as tarot cards, runes, crystals, rocks, etc. are “as good” as those psychics who do not.   I love this question…

Folks, I can say without hesitation that some of the absolute best psychic readings our staff testers have had, have been from those that use “tools”.  I am placing the word tools in parentheses on purposes.  It is such a taboo term within the psychic field because many psychics that do not use tools feel they are better or more gifted psychics than those that do.  This is simply not true in many cases.

What many fail to realize is that the use of tools is not necessarily a “requirement” for many psychics, even though they choose to use them.  Many of these psychics receive messages on a daily basis without any tools in front of them.  I’ve had tarot readings where the psychic can tell me the name of my dead grandfather and what exactly he died from.  That is NOT something you see on a tarot card.  My grandfather happens to have a very rare name and I can assure anyone reading this that no tarot deck in existence has that name printed on it.  My point here is that a psychic is a psychic – tools or no tools.  That link to their guides is there, with or without tools.

Having said this, the logical question would be, “Well if they don’t need tools, why do they use them?”  The answer is simple, because they like to and it works for them.  If two famous chefs are asked to prepare a pie, they will most likely prepare it very differently.  As a Food Network junkie, I’ve seen Bobbie Flay make a very different pecan pie than Paula Dean, but you know what, I bet they are both absolutely delicious.  Both are award-winning chefs, yet both make their pies differently.  If Bobby Flay uses honey as a sweetener and Paula Dean uses molasses, the end-result is still a sweet taste.

Ok, so I’ve exhausted the food analogy, but I am trying to relay the fact that just because two psychics use a different means of communicating with your guides, loved ones, etc., it does not mean that one is better than the other.  Many psychics that do not use any tools accuse those that do of having a “gimmick” or not being as naturally gifted as they are.  This, in many cases, is ego talking.  One cannot judge another without having first “tasted the pie”, to reference the analogy above.  My reply to one psychic that criticizes or judges another that uses tools is always, “Well have you ever had a reading with them?”  The answer is usually, “Well, no…but…”

The important distinction to make is if the psychic is advertising himself or herself as a Psychic Tarot Reader or simply a Tarot Reader.  Anyone can pull a deck of cards and read the little book for the meanings.  I agree that this is not “psychic” advice.  However, if a Psychic Tarot Reader can give you evidential information that you know is not printed on any card, rune, or stone, then you are receiving genuine psychic messages.

My team has conducted hundreds of test readings with psychics from all over the globe with all different modalities.  Some use tools and some do not.  I guarantee you that if you sat in front of one that uses tools versus one that does not and put a blindfold on, you would not question the accuracy of one over the other (assuming you have two good psychics).

One must also consider this fact – spirit guides make certain “agreements” with the psychic they are communicating with.  This could be an agreement to speak to them, to show them images, to give them feelings, to give them smells, etc.  These are known as the “clair’s” – clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc.

Consider the possibility that a psychic’s guides may prefer to communicate with that particular psychic THROUGH tarot cards, runes, crystals, etc.  This has to do with past life experiences, what the psychic connects with, symbolism, and more.  So again, those out there that degrade the abilities of a psychic that uses tools are not really considering the entire picture.  Just because some guides communicate directly does not mean that others do not communicate via tools.  Consider how your co-workers, friends and family communicate.  How many use different communication methods such as phone, email, text, etc.?  It is no different with the guides and the psychics they communicate with.

So here is my word of advice to those out there wondering about the strength of a psychic with tools versus one without – don’t wonder any longer.  Taste both pies, folks, life’s too short not to!

  • Hi Shay!

Love the post. I do readings with and without tools, but I find the ones with Tarot or Oracle Cards to be a lot more fun and easier to “convey” to the client as they can look at the images too. I learned to develop my connection without tools and added them later because I really enjoy the cards =)
