The Irony of Change

By Cori Savenelli

The inevitability of change is something that we can always count on. When we learn to find stability in that knowledge, change becomes less frightening, less of a challenge, almost comforting. But there is a great irony in people’s reaction to change, their opposition to it and their fear of it.

Take for example a romantic situation diminishing against the will of one of the parties involved. Often the agony associated with an unwanted break-up is so horrifying, so heartbreaking, that the participant(s) is/are inconsolable. Yet, what are they advised to do? Change! Get a haircut, meet a new person, find a hobby, keep busy and so forth.

The horror of a life changing its course from the path it was currently on is just as frightening as the content of the change itself. The fear and inconvenience of having to start over again, to redirect, is annoying and bothersome. Yet the very thing we do to remedy this emptiness of unwanted change…is to change!

So what is the difference? Why do we choose and are advised to change to help us to heal from…change? The difference is that when it is unwanted, change does not give us the time to “ease” into it. When we can control its appearance in our lives, we have control over what we are doing, how long it will take, the steps we will take and so forth. We can procrastinate until we feel the new path is comfortable enough to traverse. This reluctance is mainly about the fear of letting the universe lead!

When we say we are afraid of change, what we are implying is that we do not trust the universe and its energy to lead us in the right direction. We are so comfortable in the decisions WE have made, that we allow our big human brains to rule our destiny. The problem with that is that we often forget that the brain and the spirit must work TOGETHER. Just as your brain will try to stop you when you are headed into a direction lead by impulse without reason, your spirit will, in turn, guide your hand against that which your brain has so adamantly advocated without concern that your intuition has been knocking on your divine door all along.
