The Firsts
By Cori Savenelli
I will never be 18 again. I will never be 25 again. I will never be 30 again.
When you reflect on your life, during those moments when you mourn for your youth, your perfect skin, your indestructible metabolism and your idealism…think on this:
You will never again be disappointed…:
~by the agony of the first love that you naively thought would last forever.
~that you don’t know what to say at your first real job interview.
~that you found a gray hair.
~by the realization that your parents are human.
~that you went up a dress size for no apparent reason.
~that someone called you “Ma’am” or thought your girlfriend was your daughter, or your daughter was your granddaughter for the first time.
~the first time that you were too tired to go out by 9:30pm.
~by the realization that some things in this world are not that easily fixable through love and kindness.
~that racism still exists.
~that stereotypes are practically unchangeable.
~that you will have to be something other than attractive to make it in the world.
~that death happens…every day.
~that not everyone is honest.
~that you do have choices, and have to make them for yourself.
~that the only person in this world you can control, is you.
~that love really does matter.
~that love is often not enough.
~that loss and pain make up a very good portion of our human, spiritual and psychological existence.
~that is really does matter whether people like you.
~that your family is more important and influential in your life than you thought.
~that running doesn’t solve all your problems.
~that your best friend may not have been, may not be or may not have your best interests at heart.
~that “i love you” sometimes means absolutely nothing.
~that when you watched the movie “Closer” it made more sense to your life than “Sleepless in Seattle”
~that sometimes subtracting will make you happier than adding.
~that you are who you are, no matter how much jewelry, make-up, money, facades, stories, clothes, ideas, brains, friends or enemies you have.
~that you indeed, are meant to love and be loved unconditionally FOR those qualities, not DESPITE them.
~that you are not perfect, and in that there is perfection.
