A Daily Look Within – Day 1

Primarily, as both the substance in which we dig to plant our household and agricultural roots, and as the planet on which we have been fortunate to spend time, Earth has played a background, stable, and substantive role in our own existence. Earth exists to show us how to be all-encompassing, and to realize there is more than one side. Earth as soil can contain many microorganisms, chemicals, nutrients, tiny bits of matter and life forms that cannot be detected very well unless you use a microscope. Despite the fact that our world, Earth, the planet, has been in existence far longer than people have inhabited it, our living on this big hunk of moving rock has had a profound effect on its very survival. People have threatened Earth—got Mother Nature pretty riled up—and like any Mother, there will come a time when enough will be enough, already. Her patience with her children is wearing mighty thin these days.

Maybe this is another reason I find it a bit more difficult to write about Earth. I feel the Earth’s connection to me as being both a supportive and motherly one, while at the same time, I empathically feel we can and should be doing more in our power to support her back; to reciprocate. It has been like such a one-way street. Where is the love? What have we done for Earth lately? It is like pulling teeth to get people to realize how urgent it is to do things, like recycle. Scientists, concerned citizens, and celebrities alike have done so much to get the word out and to try to get us to realize our ecological doom. Anybody with a heart should, by now, realize very deeply just how unfair we have been to our home over the years, and how much we have taken it for granted. What’s the song lyric—you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone?
