A Daily Look Within – Day 12

Many of us hold much validity in our lives to being “grounded,” as though it means more to have a strong sense of just who we are. It is as if being grounded makes us more substantial in some way, or gives us a firm footing from which to sprint off to whatever goal or action we might have. Yet, in contemplation, we may meditate on the fact that so many of the things that happen on our road are in a state of constant interplay–a constant cycle of paradox striving for balance between two extremes–in this case, grounded and groundlessness.

Examine your own experience. An honest look at life, and your interaction with it, will tell you if you have achieved a state of fundamental groundlessness–that very basic sensation of not clinging to any structures or beliefs.

Think about it–structures (things of form) or beliefs (ideas we may have or tenets we hold). How many things, in the course of a certain period of time, do we knowingly choose to hold onto, to call our own, to claim as belonging to us? Look at your own life for one hour, or one day, and make a quick list. We are taught from our first days in school to put our name on all of our papers. We wouldn’t want to lose any of our work, right? “Our” mail and packages arrive at “our” address. We are fast to latch onto ideas and inspiration, certainly. Write up a great blog post and out it comes with “our” name on it. Compose a piece of music, and make it unique…but secure that copyright so get “your” royalties if someone else plays it. Draw a work of art, and be sure to sign it so everyone knows “you” did it. Perform a fantastic feat and “you” will get the acclaim.
