A Daily Look Within – Day 23

There are people who freely communicate and others who need to be asked for information–if they want to share it. In a group situation, whether it is a paid work situation or a volunteer effort, maintaining a good communication balance can be a tricky proposition.

The reason it is important, however, is because of what is disclosed. When someone chooses to communicate selectively, it leaves others wondering what is “not” being mentioned, and generates that fear of the unknown–whether it is founded or unfounded. Selective communication creates shadows of doubt, which can lead to any number of results. We might be happily surprised to find that a situation is running smoothly. On the other hand, not knowing (or not having full disclosure) can lead to abuses or problems that require handling on an immediate basis.

Imagine going to the doctor with a problem and for whatever reason, you only tell the doctor a little bit of what is going on. We hear a lot these days about how a doctor visit might only last a few minutes, and the effects that shortened appointment time can have on the kind of care we receive. It is the doctor’s business to know what is going on, but even they can only deal with what they know–whether it is disclosed by the patient, an examination, or a scan.

Contemplation Piece: Many of us operate in this same way. How many marriages or family relationships are affected by doubt when communication becomes dysfunctional? Sometimes, we get to a point of rationalizing that we might be better off not knowing what is going on. If that were true, we would not have such a thing as news.
