While it’s important to reflect and reframe past situations so you that you can see what you’ve learned from those experiences, it’s also a good idea to look back at past situations to find the synchronicity.
Swiss psychologist Carl Jung coined the term “synchronicity” in the 1920s. According to Wikipedia, “It was a principle that Jung felt gave conclusive evidence for his concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious.”
Sometimes we look at these as mixed blessings. Usually, these are the events that cause us to say, “That was the best thing that could have happened.”
When I was a professional recruiter, I noticed an interesting pattern. Since my role was as an external recruiter, various companies would engage me to search for and interview candidates for open their positions. Then I would recommend which candidates they should bring in to meet. As you might expect, sometimes when my recommended candidates got super excited about the job but didn’t get an offer, they were devastated. I always took it upon myself to try to cheer them up, partly because I couldn’t stand being the bearer of bad news, but also because I wanted them to stay engaged and upbeat for other possible job opportunities that might come across my desk for them to consider.
Here’s what I noticed over time… candidates who didn’t get a job we had worked on together would usually call me a week or two later to tell me that they got another offer for a job that was even better than the one for which they were turned down.
