Feng Shui from the Inside, Out – Day 11

One of the easiest adjustments to make in a kitchen to make it a more Feng Shui compliant is to make sure that nothing sharp or pointy is on display. The appearance of knives and scissors triggers primal places in the brain that deal with self-defense. Remember, we are, first and foremost, animal creatures and as such, our most fundamental drive is survival and for millions of years our ancestors used pointy objects both to derive nutrition from the local fauna and to defend themselves from other humans encroaching on their territory. This primitive-sounding behavior has a lot more tenure in our DNA than does what we like to call civilization.

It is said that the prominent placement of visible knife blades in a kitchen leads to arguments and I have received quite a lot of testimony to support that in my years of consultations. Those wooden blocks into which knives can be slid, blades out of sight, are a definite improvement, more so if discretely placed or slightly hidden.

Open trash cans are another source of downgraded energy and, thankfully, one sees fewer and fewer of those as Feng Shui gently begins to color mainstream thought. Good Feng Shui is all about creating balance and peace in a home, about creating a nest wherein one can weather the storms of life. An orderly, clean kitchen where all the appliances are working as they should, creates a strong center for that nest.
