Feng Shui from the Inside, Out – Day 23

That’s it.

You paying attention to what you are doing.

It’s a little more difficult than you might think because minds are usually way busier than we even notice because we’re used to the constant chatter. Yet, once the skill is acquired, it becomes second nature, That’s because for your body, paying attention is it’s first nature. Paying attention is what bodies do.

When you are, say, driving, is all you are doing, driving? Is your mind totally engaged in scanning the road and what is up ahead of you, paying attention to what can be seen in your rear view mirrors, the other cars in the nearby vicinity? “Oh, yes,” you say, “it is!”

And is it doing anything else? Listening to the radio, maybe? Rehashing a conversation from the day before? Thinking about what’s next on your schedule? It might be. In fact, it probably is. So you are not entirely paying attention to driving.

I’m not saying you should be, because that would be me telling you what to do, (as well as the pot calling the kettle black), I’m just pointing out that paying attention to the one thing you are doing – in this case, driving – is not that simple because in this day and age what we do is not that simple, usually because we are doing many things at once.

But washing dishes is pretty simple, no?

Maybe not. Maybe you’re looking out the window or having a conversation or listening to the radio or television or a conversation in the next room. My point is that if you at least try to focus on the one thing that you have set out to do you will begin to get your mind used to limiting – and therefore improving – its ability to focus. Multi-tasking does not bring the body peace and hampers its ability to bring your mind peace and when I saypeace what I am talking about is a condition of significantly reduced stress.
