Feng Shui from the Inside, Out – Day 3

In childhood, the ego process is necessary for survival because it is focused on the needs of the individual. Because most neural connections are firmly established before the age of seven, so too is the nature of the Ego Process. Lacking any kind of self-consciousness or self-awareness, the nature of the Ego Process will remain the same well into adulthood despite the fact that for most of us, by adulthood our relationship to survival has dramatically changed because as mature individuals, we are in charge of our lives (to the degree that anyone can be in charge of anything).

The result of this continuity is that a good many supposedly ‘grown-up’ people are walking around on the earth with an Ego Process that is still firmly anchored in its childhood world, still bowing to whatever constraints were in place then, still reveling in the occasional pat on the head from an authority figure, still gloating over getting picked first or lamenting over getting picked last, unable to maintain a neutral stance, embracing the knowledge that everything is – always – exactly as it should be.

It’s essential to know where you stand with your Ego Process. There’s a bumper sticker I’ve seen that says “Question authority,” well, the Ego Process thinks that it is your inner authority so ideally you’ll take a moment to question yourself even about what may seem on the face of it to be ‘good’ decisions. “Where did this come from? Is this the grown-up, adult me making this choice or is it some other aspect of me?”
