Illuminate the Committee in Your Head – Day 7
We are each the victim at times. We are each the bully at times. We are each the rescuer at times. When we rescue another person we are victimizing them because we don’t believe they can take care of themselves. When we do this within ourselves among our subpersonalities, we create a war zone in our head. Healing can happen when someone or one subpersonality can break out of character and dis-identify with a narrow or limited point of view.
We don’t have to be nobly rescuing victims, being hurt when they start to resent us, and then lashing out at them because we’ve shifted into the bully role. Yes, it’s wonderful to help others, but when we’re doing it in order to fix the unhealed part of ourselves, we get stuck in this dramatic triangle and prevent true healing for all.
~Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D.
Now go back to the triangle you drew and see if any of those other people you identified as victim, bully, or rescuer are also parts of you in any way. Take some time to simply consider how you are a victim, bully, and rescuer to yourself. Then ask who would you be if you were none of those? Who is the observer of the triangle of disempowerment?
