A Melting Pot of Letting Go: Songs of Heartache

The next three days will be dedicated to the arts as a means of letting go, both on the part of the artist, and on the part of those partaking of the work. Today is all about songs of heartache.

No doubt most people have a song or two that’s guaranteed to bring a tear to their eye, whether it’s connected to a certain person or it reminds them of a difficult time in their life. Most of the songs we feel such connections to in some way help us to believe the artist is singing right to us. They get inside our hearts with their sincerity and vulnerability, and we know they have felt how we do, once upon a time.

How brilliant is it that an artist can express their own heartache and through that encourage others to feel pieces of their own? Artists have a beautiful opportunity to let go of their pain through the act of creating their work, and in doing so, others connect with the art on a deep, emotional level. No wonder it’s called a gift! Perhaps we sometimes forget that they, too are human and susceptible to the same ups and downs we have in our own lives. It shows tremendous strength to let go so publicly; to be exposed to potential criticism on top of the depth of their pain but to go on creating for the sake of their love of the process.
