Stories We Tell Ourselves

On Day 6 of our challenge, you learned about the creation of “I,” and today’s challenge is based upon that.

Throughout your life, there have been many “I’s” created. The situations and events that have happened to you have created those “I’s.” Some of those “I’s” you are proud of, and many of them you are not. Some of those “I’s” are beneficial, and some of them are not so supportive. Each and every one of those “I’s” is based upon some kind of story that you have built for yourself, and keep telling yourself and others. Most of those stories, from your perspective, are based upon what you think is true.

Today’s challenge is to pick one story out of your life; particularly, I want you to pick an event in your life where you think you have been wronged. This story could be from a recent past experience, or it could be from a page in the ‘history book of your life.’ Pick one story, and journal about it. Be explicit; go as deep, and cover as much of the story as possible. Then, I want you to take a pause, and stop writing. After a few minutes break, I want you to open your mind up, and consider the story from a different perspective. This time, I want you to open your mind up to a perspective where the same situation has benefited you. For example, the event allowed you to recognize your own strength, etc. This time write a second story, still based upon the original events, but can you tell the story differently? Can you tell the story, and how that situation has ultimately helped you? I want you to be explicit, go as deep, and cover as much as you did on the first story that you wrote.
