4. An open system: Walking on a treadmill is a closed system, meaning that there is no variation. Even walking on a sidewalk, there are curbs to go up and down, obstacles to overcome and uneven surfaces. This makes us use our muscles in different ways and improves our agility and balance.
5. Neurogenesis: Only 120 mins a week of brisk walking can increase neural connections in the brain and lead to growth of new neurons.
6. Weight Management: Walking burns calories and it is an important part of maintaining your weight.
Your Challenge:
I want you to take a walk in nature, preferably by yourself. This way, talking to someone else does not distract you. Social support is important in weight loss, but for this challenge it is better to be alone. The pace and duration is up to you based on your own level of comfort and fitness. As you walk, I want you to think about these things. Pick the order based on how they come up for you. Think about breath, balance, nourishment and gratitude. At some point, focus in on your breathing, not trying to control it, but just notice it move in and out. Find your own rhythm and your own flow. Notice the world around you. Notice the flowers, the trees, the rocks etc. Feel your heart expand as it connects to these things. Revel in the beauty of Mother Earth. Spend a few moments contemplating all the gifts that this walk is bringing you. Feel the sun on your face, the balance it brings to your mood and mental capacities and really notice all the ways the walk is nourishing you. Find things to be grateful for and feel your heart expand as express your appreciation. The point of this walk is to mindful and in the moment. Exercise does not have to be a chore, it can be a healing, heart-opening experience that blesses your spirit, calms the mind and balances the body.
