Reclaim Your Powerful You! – Day 10

From Hide and Seek to Know and Tell

by Veronica Lee

Think back when you were a child. Imagine telling your parents about something you perceived of yourself, or something you thought. Were you heard? When you raised your hand in school, did your teachers notice you? When you tried to express your feelings, did you feel understood? Recall your experiences of touch. Were your interactions positive or negative? What was the reaction of ‘authorities’ when you pointed out hypocritical behavior or questioned an accepted system? Throughout your youth, did you feel as if you counted?

How we show up in the world today is usually an unconscious accumulation of the many layers of past conditioning and experiences. Though we can create ourselves anew at any given moment, the patterning we habitually carry forth is like a tightly woven tapestry – a tapestry behind which we feel quite comfortable hiding.

It makes sense that if we were not suitably seen, heard, understood, touched, or accepted as children, it would be hard to reveal ourselves – let alone be ourselves – as adults. In fact, after a lifetime of trying to conform, please and protect, many of us have lost contact with our True Self.

To reclaim our Power we must reclaim our True Self. As most of us have systematically hidden various aspects of ourselves, we must first embark on a journey of discovery.

Believe it or not, many are afraid to know themselves. They are anxious about what they might find lurking in their shadows. They fear they will lose relationships, or have to take responsibility for a shortcoming. Deeper still, they worry that if they look inward, they may not find anything of value at all!
