Red, Blue & Rainbow

It is interesting to me that people still want to disregard civil rights. Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court shot down the Defense of Marriage Act that has been in place since the Clinton Era. This Act basically did not recognize same sex marriages, even if they were legally married in their state. Thus, allowing the federal government to deny spousal benefits to same sex marriage couples. I was listening to the response from the people who opposed this ruling and I was left flabbergasted. The buzzword that was common to all of them was, “We are destroying the building blocks of society”. It is interesting, if the foundation of our society is based on the marrying of two opposing genders, we are doomed to fail. Considering 50% of marriages end in divorce, I would say we are already standing on shaky ground. What if, and I know this will sound crazy, but what if instead the building blocks of society were based on love, caring, tolerance and respect. It seems to me those build a stronger foundation, then the mere combination of a man and a woman.
Civil Rights vs. Morality
Another argument I heard against the court’s ruling is that the courts have no right making moral decisions. Are you kidding me? You think this is an issue of morality? And if so, it does not break my moral code. It seems to most of the world that this is an issue of civil rights, not one of morality. And besides, as someone who believes in God, I was always under the impression that it was not up to us to judge another for his or her behavior. “Do not judge, lest ye be judged”. It seems that we should leave the issue of morality between the individual and their God; he doesn’t need our help in the matter. I also remember reading somewhere that we are to love our neighbor.
