Your Conscious, Friendly Mind – Day 29

Your Conscious, Friendly Mind Day 29

Serving Those Who Suffer Is Serving God

If we are sincere as we progress in the life of our spirit, the magnitude of the pain and human suffering that goes on in our world exerts a pull on us. Is there any happiness superior to that of bending our knees and serving those who are in pain? Our compassion has to be active.  We are part of the whole.  What wealth, what light and joy and well being that we garner in life, we are meant to share.

Whatever our efforts to share with others, we do only a little. What we receive is huge, incomprehensible. We do not share a lot. We receive a lot.

Those who visit our street schools on the footpaths of Calcutta, India, say the same thing. The children we serve are homeless. These children were born on the streets. They grew up on the streets. Their life is on the streets. When we meet them, when we talk to them, when we play with them, the language that they share with us through their hearts will become our deepest memory of India. These children will be imprinted in our minds. We will have seen a new dimension. We have seen God in a human face. We have met God in another human heart, and we are forever changed.

There can be beauty and joy in the midst of poverty. There are many agonies in the midst of affluence. I have seen this time and again in my life working with street children in India and during my travels around the world, among rich and successful people.
