Barbara Marx Hubbard: Visions of a Universal Humanity
Actually, “Visions” was done several years ago and it is a vision of the potential for the next stage of human evolution with some of the very key visionaries giving their insights into trying to put together what I call a memetic code. A meme is an idea. Like a gene builds a specific body, a meme builds a specific culture. And if you get a lot of memes together you get a whole new culture.
Many of us feel a new culture is being born but we don’t yet have the memetic code like we do, let’s say, about modernism or about certain types of scientific materialistic views. There are a whole set of ideas that are believed about that or about a fundamentalist religion. But if we’re talking about the emergence of a co-creative society and what I call the universal human, what are the descriptors? What are the key ideas that we’re holding that if held together would give birth to a new humanity? So that’s what “Visions” is about.
You had a vision in February 12, 1966. You went for a walk and you asked a very simple question: what is humanity’s new story? What happened when you asked that question?
Well, I would say that I had an expanded reality experience. I became in my mind’s eye like an astronaut. I could see Earth from space, but Earth itself was not just a planetary body, it was a living system. I could see it alive with the people and the communication systems and the flashing connectivity of the parts. But I basically saw it struggling to breathe; it was running out of energy.
