Studies show that insomniacs are more than twice more likely to experience congestive heart failure than those who sleep well, and five times more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. Insomnia may also be a risk factor in numerous psychological disorders. A recent study, conducted by a research team in the Netherlands, tracked heart disease and strokes in more than 14,000 people for over a decade. By the end of the study, approximately 600 people had suffered heart disease or stroke, and 129 died.

The study found that deaths were less likely in people who followed all four positive lifestyle recommendations – exercising, eating healthily, moderate alcohol consumption, and not smoking. Observing these behaviors was associated with a 57% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 67% lower risk of dying from stroke or heart disease. Interestingly, when having appropriate sleep was added to the picture (7 or more hours), the beneficial effect was amplified and the death rate from cardiovascular disease was 83% lower.

A perennial question for us all is; what does it take to have good health? We can visit the doctor and amass the medication, or we can think about what we could do differently to solve the problem permanently. Hypocrites said 2,473 years ago that “our natures are the physicians of our disease”. If he got that way back then, how come we don’t get it now? Following suit with the father of modern medicine, Monica Jane Shalit and Jeanette Leigh, encourage you to get to the heart of your sleep issues, and where possible, deal with the initial stressors.
