About the Fund

On October 9, 2012, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban in an attempt to silence her and end her campaign for girls’ rights to go to school. Her shooting, and her refusal to stand down from what she believed in, brought to light the plight of millions of children around the world who are denied an education. Now Malala is making real her vision to put every girl in school through the Malala Fund.

The Malala Fund will focus on three key objectives:

1.  Investing in innovative solutions to deliver high-quality education to girls in disadvantaged communities around the world

2.  Amplifying the voices of girls to keep girls on the global agenda

3.  Encourage leaders to take meaningful policy actions to make girls’ education a true priority

Our First Grant

“Today I am going to announce the happiest moment in my life, and that is the first grant of the Malala Fund.” ~Malala Yousafzai

In April, the first grant of the Malala Fund was announced by Angelina Jolie. The grant was made to a Pakistan-based nongovernmental organization focused on providing education to girls who are engaged in domestic labor or at high risk of entering the workforce. The grant allows forty girls ranging in age from five to twelve to attend school. The program not only provides formal support at school and access to technology, but also fosters a valuable network of girls and families that values girls’ education.

The Future

The Malala Fund is now growing into a full organization that will launch in the fall of 2013. In the words of Malala, “I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund, and let us turn the education of forty girls into forty million girls.”
