Yogi Cameron – A Model Guru

JVM: What drew you most to Yoga and Ayurvedic Healing?
Yogi Cameron: After living a life based on the outer, more material world, I found that the inner journey was calling me and this initially came in the form of yoga. I first started practicing yoga at the Sivananda center in Paris in the late 80’s. Yoga, beyond the physical asana, is actually all about training the mind; Ayurveda is about finding balance in the body and constructing a lifestyle to support that balance. So after a number of years of practicing yoga, I began pursuing Ayurveda as the natural continuation of this path. In this sense, body/mind/spirit are all covered in this path and practice.
JVM: Ayurvedic medicine seems to be gaining more credibility and support. How can this ancient healing system help us?
Yogi Cameron: Many people today believe that they have to trick the body into behaving itself, like when we take a painkiller to mask uncomfortable sensations in the body. But nature is much smarter than that. The ancient Yogis knew that if they followed nature as their teacher, they could not only attain greater health, but they could learn the secrets of the universe—both within and beyond themselves.
For instance, in my TV show A Model Guru, there are numerous examples of people who have many different ailments and illnesses. More often than not, they have tried every type of medicine, ointment, exercise program, and even surgery to get better—and yet they never get better. When they embrace Ayurvedic medicine as well as aspects of the Yogic path, they allow nature to take over and heal the body without any interference. After this kind of natural treatment, they begin to heal. It is simple: follow the natural path and you find balance.
