JACK: Buddhism really started with —
OPRAH: Is it a religion or tradition or a way of being?
JACK: Buddhism started with — with the teachings of the Buddha and then for some people it became a religion. So it’s certainly a big world religion. But on the other hand, as the Dalai Lama says, it’s primarily a science of mind. That is to say the teachings of Buddhism don’t ask anybody to become a Buddhist or change in that way.
OPRAH: Or to believe in Buddhism?
JACK: Or to believe in Buddhism. In fact —
OPRAH: So you can be a Christian and be a Buddhist.
JACK: Exactly.
OPRAH: You can be Jewish and be a Buddhist.
JACK: Exactly. You can be Muslim and be Buddhist.
OPRAH: You can be a Muslim and be Buddhist.
JACK: Exactly. That is to say you can be a Christian or Jewish and use Buddhist practices.
