Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy, appropriately defined as the enhancement of mind, body, and spirit with the use of aromatic, botanical essential oils, has been on the forefront of holistic healing for centuries. Stretching back through many ages and civilizations, plants and the use of essential oils have played a part in many cultures over many eras and several ancient civilizations had extensive knowledge of plants and their healing properties; among those including Egypt, China, India, Greece and Middle Eastern countries. Aromatherapy is considered one of the oldest healing arts in existence, a holistic therapy, treating the whole person while providing tremendous healing and balancing properties.
Essential oils work on several layers of our body at the same time providing an overall and complete experience. They have direct effects on our physical functions within the body including anti-viral, antiseptic, and anti-microbic properties. Most effectively, essential oils trigger the release of neuro-chemical in the brain and can unlock some of the mysteries around memory recollection, suppression and enhancement. There are several scientific studies today linking emotional suppression and trauma to the root cause of dis-ease within the body.
Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded on those principles, “we hold our issues in our tissues”. Medical intuitive and renowned author Carolyn Myss, PhD said, “our biography becomes our biology”. Ayurveda and ancient Indian systems of healing are based on the principles of chakra balancing for overall health and balance indicating imbalances in the body or dis-ease is believed to start from the energetic field then to the physical. Each pure essential oil has a life force and vibrational rate which is unique and can be very powerful in healing and creating the atmosphere in a room in turn affecting our moods. Today, oils are widely used in meditation, chakra balancing, cleansing auras, and several modalities of energy healing and spiritual ceremonies.
An essential oil is defined as an acrid, flammable, highly volatile liquid obtained from plants such as leaves, flowers, stems, twigs, fruit, roots, and bark, shrubs, grasses and trees through the process of distillation. It is lighter than water and can contain over 100 naturally occurring chemical and aromatic constituents of the plant. The many different qualities and properties of each essential oil make their therapeutic and medicinal uses unlimited. Some of the most popular and safest uses are massage, bath, and diffused inhalation.
When using essential oils directly on the body, it is best and most effective when blended with a carrier like almond oil, grapeseed, coconut, castor oil or added to a vegetable base cream or lotion. Do not apply essential oils “neat” or directly onto the skin without a carrier as this may lead to sensitivities and skin irritations. A simple blend would be 15ml carrier with 5 drops of essential oils, and remember we respond energetically to the vibration of the oils, so a little goes a long way.
Basic science states that oil and water do not mix so when using essential oils for your bath it’s very important that you dissolve the oils properly to avoid direct contact with sensitive areas of your skin. Generally, 6-10 drops of essential oils properly dissolved in a vegetable glycerine or mixed in with bath salts and added just before you step into the bath.
Some favorite ways of diffusing essential oils are through room sprays or diffusers to deodorize your space, freshen linens, liven up your next dinner party, or invite the aura of calm and relaxation. Again, as oil and water do not mix a general blend would be 1 drop of essential oil per ml of veg. glycerine or pure alcohol, allow to dissolve completely and then mix with water (great for facial toners as well!) Be sure to add your blend to a glass bottle as essential oils would gradually eat through plastics. Another simple method of diffusing oils would be to just add one drop to a tissue, place in a room or car to allow the scent to permeate, and even when the scent oxidizes it’s still working away because of the molecules in the air.
There are some very effective aromatherapy diffusers like the Nebulizer which are also useful, but be careful of others involving the use of open flames due to the high volatility of essential oils making them highly flammable.
The Art of Subtle Aromatherapy uses essential oils in a very diluted form of inhalation, 5ml carrier with 1 drop of essential oils and can impact our energy field in non-physical ways. It draws upon the subtle, energetic and vibrational qualities of the oils rather than just on their physical properties and are view as the rainbow bridge between subtle and physical; making their uses powerful aids in energy healing work and meditation.
