A Day for Love and Appreciation
by Dr John Demartini
Valentine’s Day can be a great reminder for us to stop for at least one moment each year and reflect on the deep love and appreciation we have for that special someone in our life. What a great opportunity it is to take some precious time and share our deepest and most meaningful feelings of closeness and thoughtfulness and possibly participate in a moment of romantic or intimate exchange or adventure. When we reflect upon and even list the many contributions or gifts this special person may have provided to our life, we can sometimes well up with tears of gratitude and experience chills of appreciation for the special place they hold in our hearts.
Even if there is presently not one special person that has the key to our heart, we can still use this day to reflect on the many special people that when joined together fill many if not all our voids or needs and that represent one or many surrogate components of that one special person we may long for. Whether there is one or many, or female or male providing the key or keys to our heart and fulfillment, it is wise to use this memorable day as moment to love and appreciate the whole in whatever form. Without such a Valentine’s Day reminder we might overlook this one special person or these many participating people and pass up the opportunity to contribute our love and appreciation back in turn. So why not participate whole heartedly in the celebration of this special reminder and create a memorable moment for someone or some-many we deeply care for.
The most meaningful way of showing our love and appreciation is to acknowledge them for who they are, as they are, and by sharing some memorable gift that opens their heart. Whether this gift is inexpensive or expensive, extravagant or simple, these variables mean less than whether it is truly sincere and heartfelt. Each of us has a unique set of values and whatever is most valuable to us individually makes for the most meaningful and thoughtful gift. A poetic or romantic letter presented with a hug and kiss, and music and flowers, at a special dining place can sometimes be more meaningful and powerful than most other items or actions. Anything that truly fulfills the highest values of this partner or their surrogates will initiate a reciprocal reaction of love and appreciation back.
We all just want to be loved and appreciated for who we truly are and we all want to love and appreciate ourselves and others with equanimity and equity. What greater way to accomplish this than to use Valentine’s Day as the great reminder to initiate the beautiful chain reaction of love and appreciation. It could just be the greatest way to make the biggest difference in our world. Gratitude is the key that opens up the gateway of our heart and inside our heart is love. When love comes radiating out from our heart it window washes our mind and brings about inspiration while cleansing the body with the powerful feeling of enthusiasm. What more could we do for the one(s) we love but to make their Valentine’s Day extra special. What more could we do for ourselves.
