Money – Do You Chase or Do You Follow?

This distinction has recently come to my attention and the pieces have just fallen into place. It may seem that the difference between chasing and following is a subtle one, but it’s a key one where money is concerned.

Take this example from human relationships: sometimes in interactions between two people (romantic or otherwise) one party is more interested than the other. They may pursue the other person, phoning or texting them repeatedly, dropping by, or sending gifts in the hope that the relationship will become one of more mutual esteem. The desperation behind the actions is palpable and can feel uncomfortable and distasteful as it escalates. It most often serves to drive the two further apart, not closer together.

On the other side of the equation is the slightly more receptive state of following, where the opportunity is presented, and it is left entirely up to the other party to accept (follow) or not. It’s not a coincidence in this case that the word follow is similar in sound and visually to the word allow. It’s an opening of the door, an invitation to go where the love and acceptance lies, if you’re willing to acknowledge your value and potential.

This is what the energy of money asks us to do – let go of the desperate need to acquire it for the sake of hoarding or possessing (money and all the things that can be purchased with it), and instead follow it where it leads, openly, trusting that whatever needs arise will be addressed. The energy of money is the energy of Love. It is a tool, a manifestation of Divine Love, and it serves as a way to support our bodily needs. If you align yourself with that knowledge and energy, opportunities will be presented to move towards acceptance of the gifts that await you.

The thing is, so many of us have been taught and trained to chase it, not understanding the subtle difference. We look for opportunities where they exist (the job pages, investments, the lottery, etc) and we begin to buy into the idea that these are the only ways to acquire and accumulate wealth. We become competitive with others through this existing system, and forget to share of ourselves the things which we value most, believing the ‘reality’ that resources are limited. We shut off our brain to the potential that exists elsewhere, an opportunity that looks nothing like we expected, that we might not accept (follow) if we are not open to the idea that it could be an opportunity. A-ha.

Here’s something that might add another layer to this. It’s talking about the film Evan Almighty as one example of enlightenment coming from unexpected places:

…[Morgan Freeman] (as God) said, ‘If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives them patience, or does he give them the opportunity to be patient?’ He gives a couple more examples, but by this time I had felt the massive click. I had heard said many times that we are always given what we ask for, but it might not look the way we expect. I thought I had understood that, and maybe I had to some extent, albeit in much simpler terms. I was thinking along the lines of ‘I want a million dollars’ translating to ‘you’ll get the money, but from a different source.’ This revelation is another layer of that, and adds the really important component of looking for the opportunity in everything that arrives, even if it comes in a package that actually looks like the opposite of what you asked for. If you ask for money, money may actually appear to disappear from your life, and what is offered up instead is a whole new way of looking at the world that affords you a whole new set of skills with which to go out and earn a living. Presto, prayer answered, but holy crap, it looks different than you could ever have imagined. Morgan Freeman/God rocks!

So in this case, if money appears to disappear, to lead you down a path to find your own innate value and uniqueness in the world, with the promise that using your gifts will (eventually) lead to financial rewards the like of which you’ve never seen, do you follow? Or do you chase the tried and true methods that leave an aftertaste of uncertainty and discomfort in your mouth, and risk distancing yourself further from the thing you are pursuing?

I say follow the Love. To follow is to allow that Love to lead you to a place designed just for you, where money becomes a joyful expression of appreciation for your heartfelt gifts.
