In 2005, when Tom Wellinger got behind the wheel of his vehicle while intoxicated and caused a fatal collision that killed Gary Weinstein’s wife and two young sons, the two men’s lives were tragically brought together and forever changed. For Shawne Duperon, a six-time EMMY® winner and founder of The Project: Forgive Foundation, this incident held a unique connection for her when she quickly realized she knew both families involved.
“Knowing the loving nature of both families, I just knew something miraculous would somehow come from this tragedy,” Duperon says.
And miracles happened, indeed.
Duperon’s decision to produce a non-religious, non-partisan documentary called Project Forgive, which explores the courageous conversation of forgiveness, started a global movement. The film’s five-minute video went viral, seen by tens of thousands across the globe. It garnered major media attention including attracting the attention of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and country icon Naomi Judd, both of whom now endorse the non-profit foundation.
“We’re globally ready for a rebirthing of consciousness. Knowing Tom killed a family AND at the same time understanding that he’s also a loving man who made a horrible choice, requires emotional and spiritual maturity. That’s been my journey. In many ways this is our collective journey. The desire for spiritual growth that takes us to the next level of consciousness is probably why this project is attracting the masses. It’s been a joy to be a part of the combined awakening that is happening across the planet,” says Duperon.
In the last two years Project Forgive has raised $104,000 on a successful Kickstarter.com campaign and then another 100,000 on its own through various events.
