Does Greenwashing equals Sustainablity?

While greenwashing is not new, its use has increased over recent years to meet consumer demand for environmentally friendly goods and services. The problem is compounded by lax enforcement by regulatory agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission in the United States, the Competition Bureau in Canada, and the Committee of Advertising Practice and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice in the United Kingdom.

Critics of the practice suggest that the rise of greenwashing, paired with ineffective regulation, contributes to consumer skepticism of all green claims, and diminishes the power of the consumer in driving companies toward greener solutions for manufacturing processes and business operations.

One should keep in mind that, even when a product may be deemed Green, it does not mean it is a socially responsible one. Our best example is the case of  The SodaStream company. 

SodaStream plays an important part  in Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and had helped in the perpetuation of the Israeli oppression to the communities and its population. SodaStream assist the gears of military occupation.

Today, the situation with SodaStream got beyond critical, this week Earth Day Network agreed that companies profiting from human rights abuses have no place in the global environmental movement. Early this year, Oxfam chose to distance itself from SodaStream spokesperson the actress Scarlett Johansson, after her SuperBowl comercial where she is saving the world with the help of Soda Stream, wow!
