The Fourfold Path to Forgiveness

1) Telling the story.forgiveness-badge-purple

Begin by acknowledging you’re hurt. So, telling the story of your hurt as fully as you’re able to.

2) Naming the hurt. Once you can name what it is that has happened to you you start to heal. I have been traumatized, I have been diminished, I have been made to feel ashamed, and my dignity has been insulted. Once you can name what that hurt is then you stand a better chance of being able to find healing for it.

3) Granting forgiveness.

Then you can forgive. Then you can release that person from the burden of the hurt that has stood between you.

4) Renewing or releasing the relationship.

The last step in the process is choosing whether to renew or release the relationship. When we say renew it’s really to recreate the relationship on a different foundation. You’re not going back to the way things were, you’re stepping into a new and renewed relationship.
