Taking Time Out to Play

How often do you take the time out to play? We get busy in our hectic, everyday routine. We rarely take the initiative to take time out for ourselves to have fun. When we have fun, it brings back the joy into our lives. We learn to laugh again. We learn to have the wonder of a small child.

When we were children, we didn’t think about taking time out to play. We just played. Play was our work. We enjoyed the sunlight. We enjoyed the rippling feeling of the water as it passed our fingertips. We noticed the way the sunlight kissed the surface of the water and reflected its golden rays.

When we get outside and enjoy the outdoors, we get in touch with ourselves once again. In the quietness, if we just choose to listen for a moment, we can hear the different sounds of birds as they speak in their distinct chirps across the forest.

We usually have so much mind chatter going on in our minds, we forget to quiet ourselves down. We forget to listen to our inner voice. We forget to get in touch with the playful spirit that longs to be a child again. As a child, we ran along the beach and felt the gritty sand between our toes. We felt the wet sand between our fingers. The sand castles we built collapsed as the water came and swept it away off the beach. It is a funny thing, because even as a child we were explorers. We tasted the sand in our mouths and figured out it didn’t taste too swell in our mouths.

We’ve always been explorers in life. What is that? How does it work? And the most famous question we always ask is, “Why?” We long to understand everything that is placed in front of us. We have tried to pry open clam shells just to see what was inside. We have dug holes in the earth and we’ve been told if we dug far enough we’d reach China. We’ve swung on branches, climbed trees, and swam in mighty rivers. We’ve learned to ride a bike. We’ve learned even during play, sometimes, there are obstacles we must face. We never got upset or frustrated, we just became rebels and overcame our obstacles in nature.

Time to Play in Mother Nature’s Playground

When we were children we didn’t get anxious. We climbed over walls, snuck under fences, we searched for the way through or around the other side of the obstacle. We took the path of least resistance. As we grew older we stopped having that playful spirit.

It never cost us a dime when we were children to have fun. We just went outside and played. We’d use our imagination and vision to create new toys out of rocks, sticks, and what nature provided.

We weren’t consumed as much with worry. Today we live in a world that is preoccupied with perfectionism. We must be serious and perfect at all times. We get stiff and stuffy. We get cranky and lack a sense of humor. We get uptight.

Today, we have to learn to have fun again. There is a time to be serious. On the other hand, we need time to let ourselves be children again and explore nature. We need those treasure hunts to find feathers, leaves, rocks, and the many gems that Mother Gaia leaves us in our tracks. It’s even more of a treasure hunt when we find an amethyst or garnet.

Mother Gaia has created her own playground for all of us children. We should thank her and honor her for all the many gifts she’s given to us. Caves are even a natural wander of our world. She’s given us a world of diversity to explore through forests, rivers, lakes, oceans, and mountains. Take time out to play and enjoy her natural wanders.
