Shep Gordon: The Supermensch Interview

omtimesShep Gordon: Thank you. Yeah. I think that’s–that mirrors the words Mike [Myers] used when he wanted to do the movie, sort of. That’s interesting you would use those words, because that’s the way he always–that is, ah, sitting in the middle of a cultural–a couple of cultural revolutions. What he always said, which seemed very egotistical to me–was hard for me always to accept, but he always said, “It’s amazing. You, like, the created the culture. You were a part of the team that created the culture.”

OMTIMES: The first is that your professional life has been to be in the background propelling others into the limelight in stardom, and yet with this movie, you know, you’re the one in the limelight and stardom. How does it feel to have this turned around and be on center stage?

Shep Gordon: It’s very bizarre. I mean, part of it is very humbling. Part of it is very embarrassing. I haven’t yet really felt the effects of the fame. I feel it once in a while. But, I think because it’s a documentary, I probably won’t have to go through what a really famous person goes through. It won’t hit that wide of an audience. But, even the little touches of it are a little–at times they’re–one-by-one they’re amazingly fulfilling. You know, I get people who come up to me who really talk to me about things that are important to them. So, each individual contact I really enjoy. En masse, you start to give up your life, because all of a sudden you’re dealing with other people’s [stories] instead of your own. So, it’s bizarre. I don’t have an answer yet. I’m still sort of in the glow of, you know, the moment of everyone saying how great it is. But, I can see that it takes you off your journey.
